chronic gynecological symptoms

Interview

The following interview is with Elizabeth M., a 22 years old Contract and Operations Administrator.

What is you condition, how long have you had it and have you sort out any other treatments?

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, fibroids, adenomyosis and endometriosis in 2017. I have tried several different treatment options including the contraceptive pill, the Mirena coil and a laparoscopy.

Why did you decided to try acupuncture?

I decided to try acupuncture when I ran out of options provided by my gynaecologist. They suggested my only treatment options were a pregnancy, a hysterectomy or a menopause inducing injection. All of these options didn’t suit myself and I thought I was just going to have to deal with my chronic pain and other symptoms for the rest of my life.

I had a friend and a family member swear by acupuncture as a treatment for other health conditions, they said that it had helped them massively. I was dubious at first as I don’t like needles but I felt like I didn’t have any other options.

What was your experience of acupuncture treatment?

I found Siân while looking online for an acupuncturist, when I saw she specialised in treatment of the female reproductive system, I emailed her straight away, the booking system was simple and convenient. In my first session we talked about my medical history and then we discussed my lifestyle e.g. sleep, food and exercise habits. Siân took my pulse on both wrists and examined my tongue, and then proceeded to start my treatment. In my first session I received five different points, some in my wrists and one in my head. In further sessions I had points in my abdomen, legs, feet and chest.

What outcomes have you had from treatment?

The outcomes of my treatment have been phenomenal. My chronic pain has decreased in both intensity and frequency and has made my life a lot more manageable and enjoyable. Other symptoms such as hot sweats, back ache, and sleepless nights have seen massive improvements.

If someone else was experiencing your condition and considering acupuncture what advice would you give them?

Acupuncture has been the single most beneficial treatment for my condition that I have experienced. It has been the only treatment that has affected my pain levels and reduced my episodes of bad pain days. I could not recommend it any more than I do. I have shared my experiences with acupuncture with other women who suffer from my condition and would suggest it to anyone who struggles with a chronic pain disorder.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Also to note, I have a needle phobia and was very anxious about starting treatment as I normally faint when it comes to injections or having blood taken! Siân couldn’t be any more gentle or reassuring when giving the treatment. The needles were absolutely fine and pain free (and I haven’t passed out yet!).

Siân is the loveliest lady who also makes me feel so comfortable in our sessions, she is friendly and has always made me feel like my complaints of pain are valid, which has not always been my experience with doctors. It is so nice to be treated by someone who I know understands my conditions and genuinely wants to help me. I always look forward to my sessions and can’t thank Siân enough for all her kindness and support in dealing with my condition. She has changed my life.

Note from Siân:

I ask women who come for treatment to share their experiences of using acupuncture to manage their condition. I do this for two reasons. The first is to highlight what acupuncture can help. The second is because there is nothing better than reading about someone else’s experience and knowing you are not alone.  There is never any pressure to answer these questions, and I would like to thank the women who take the time to share their stories. They help to open up conversation and better inform treatment options.

On a personal note I would like to Thank Elizabeth for taking the time to write this. I am very touched that acupuncture has had such a profound effect and I feel privileged to have, what I consider, the best job in the world!
